"At STEM innovation isn't a slogan or a statement. It's a way of being. Generating ideas, experimenting, testing a hypothesis, this is the way we operate at STEM. From students to teachers to administration. Once this philosophy is embraced the spirit of creativity and innovation is infused into everything we do. From the way we run a class to the way we interact with students. As an art teacher at a STEM school one might think I don't fit in. That couldn't be further from the truth. In class we brainstorm solutions to a problem, test our ideas, make prototypes and evaluate our designs. Innovation is infused into every day in the art room. Students solve problems, mundane and complex together. STEM has fostered a community of collaboration that is energizing for students and teachers alike. To be around that creative energy every day is it's own reward. Not every experiment is a success and not every product is polished but once you embrace the process of innovation and stop fixating on the end result students stop pretending to be artists and become artists. They stop acting like scientists and become scientists, or engineers or programers. The culture at STEM is contagious, infectious and energizing.
