My name is Peggy Veal, this is my third year at STEM Highlands Ranch. I teach all levels of French as well as Spanish Level 1. I sponsor both the NHS and the French NHS, as well as the French club for middle school students.
Every year, I organize a trip to France over spring break. It is a wonderful experience that I enjoy having with students. It is an immersion program during which STEM students spend 10-12 days with a host family in Northern France, and take part in daily excursions including Paris and Brussels, Belgium. Last year, the trip also included an incredible STEM experience : an opportunity to prepare questions in French that our sister school was able to ask during a contact with Thomas Pesquet, French astronaut on the International Space Station via Ham Radio. This year, we hope to include a new STEM project with our trip, related to the concept of the Fibonacci Sequence. More information to come on that.
I was born and raised in Northern France. I started learning English when I was 11 years old, and Spanish when I was 12. I graduated from Charles de Gaulle University in Lille, France with a degree in English Linguistics and Translation. I came to the US for the first time in 1990 after graduating high school and I fell in love with the American Culture. I have been teaching for a total of 12 years.
When I was 16 years old, I started Ham Radio with my dad. This is how I truly learned to communicate in both English and Spanish. It was not easy, but it was more effective than any language class I ever took in school. This is why I want to teach students at STEM. I know that the best way to learn a language is to use it everyday, in real situations, using tools that appeal to students.
On a personal level, I have 3 beautiful daughters (16, 11 & 11) , and a patient husband who puts up with my workaholic tendencies. We also own 3 big dogs who keep us busy and entertained! My daughters have attended all DCSD schools and two of them currently attend STEM Highlands Ranch.
